Hike Notes

Length: 7.5 km (4.7 miles)
Duration: ~ 2.5 hours
Elevation: max 386 m (1,270 feet)
Location: Italy, Region of Sicilia, Province of Messina, Vulcano

Overview

The hike up to the Gran Cratere of Vulcano doesn’t require a guide like Stromboli or Etna, just a little stamina. We were staying in Lipari and took a boat over to Vulcano for this hike. We started late morning and finished around 1:45 pm, perhaps not the wisest time to be hiking. The 7.5 km distance is from where we were dropped off in Porto di Ponente to the Gran Catere and then back down to our lunch spot at Ristorante La Forgia (or da Maurizio) - a very nice restaurant.

The hike is easy and rewards with sweeping views, especially those north toward Lipari, which seems almost connected to Vulcano. We stayed on the crater rim and didn’t venture down into the center, though we saw several people who did. The center of the crater is decorated with words written by lining up rocks.

The Gran Cratere of Vulcano was the first one of three volcanoes we would visit; Stromboli and Etna would be in the coming days.
