Il Museo Stibbert a Firenze
Il Museo Stibbert deve la sua existenza ad un uomo stradordinario, Frederick Stibbert (1838-1906), di padre inglese e madre italiana, nato a Firenze ma educato in Inghilterra.
We went for the small show about male fashion (“Vanità Maschile”) but were surprised by this hidden gem of a museum. First of all it is off the beaten track in Florence – located north of Fortezza da Basso. The #4 bus from the main station can take your there. (Of course we walked. From the Ponte Vecchio it took about 30 minutes). On this particular day we were guided through the museum with a guide, more of a chaperone. There was only one other Italian couple so it wasn’t bad. (Not sure if this is what happens all the time or that this is low, low season and there isn’t enough staff.) At any rate it was another chance to practice lots of Italian and ask questions. The villa is really interesting. The centerpiece is the armory collection, which is quite impressive. The main room with the mounted riders was spectacular.
